Colin and Justin's perfect fantasy shopping trip
Somewhere, in a far distant land that positively drips deluxe glamour, there exists a place we long to visit. It's a land of avarice where money is no object: a fantasy world where clients instruct us to jettison financial caution with one clear instruction: "spend, spend, spend." As much as we embrace our more typical mantra "save, save save," it's a guilty pleasure, nevertheless to indulge our dreams while ignoring price tags and setting our credit cards alight.
We remember, while holidaying at Chateau Eza in the South of France, running into Ivanna Trump (a woman we've always admired for unstinting ability to lavish life with unrestricted spend) and dissecting her famous reputation for pushing luxurious boundaries. For us, Chateau Eza was a rare treat, a reward after a busy year during which business had been particularly brisk. We can't even bring ourselves to consign to paper what dinner at Eza actually cost, save to say that the bill, post brandies, made our knees tremble. For Ivanna, however, our bill was surely small change.
Treating (treating?) Ivanna to a libation ("Thank you, dahlinks, I'd love a champagne cocktail but go easy on the grenadine") we listened as she purred about her colourful existence. As we chatted she delivered her famous maxim: "Life is what it is," but was quick to add she never takes anything for granted. Apart, we're sure, from a bank balance that allows her to go anywhere, do anything and have around her anyone she chooses. In some ways we, too, enjoy a little Trumptype glamour by living vicariously through the wallets of our wealthier clients. Sure, they get to keep the indulgences we specify, but we get the fun of home fashion shopping. Which is always rather nice.
To afford ourselves a topical overview of luxurious glamour, we like nothing better than trawling midtown Yonge St., and its offshoots, in beautiful Summerhill. Up there, on that hallowed terrain, there exists as sense of decorating abandon, aka a conglomerate of small independent retailers who stock some of the most exquisite product we've ever seen. We imagine that Ms Trump might feel perfectly at home here were she ever to tour her perfectly groomed chignon from store to store.
One of our favourite Summerhill outlets is 1212 Decor, due to a flawless inventory that pops colour and explodes with glamour at every turn. Metal chain chandeliers hang from the ceiling like beautiful gowns at a Paco Rabanne fashion show, while grand boudoir sofas lure shoppers to relax for a moment before dipping again into a sea of extreme indulgence. Some furniture pieces are MidCentury Modern in terms of overall structure, yet these have been gilded or flax coated with shiny metal finishes giving them Midasesque appeal. Hanging majestically at intervals throughout the store are massive Warhol's Chanel No 5 prints, while Herms and Louis Vuitton accessories provide more names than an episode of Absolutely Fabulous.
But the most important name here, as far as we see it certainly, is that of the store's design director, Alexander Donovan, the very man whose vision brought the beautiful boutique to life just 18 months past. Arriving for our photo shoot, he couldn't have been more accommodating as he stared out from behind thick jet framed glasses like Michael Caine's Harry Palmer in Billion Dollar Brain. As we shake hands, his warm smile breaks into a massive grin and he talks proudly and justifiably so of his achievement. "We've already gained a loyal following and while there's clearly a hesitation in Canada's economy, people still want to invest in topend merchandise wherever they can. I guess it's like a personal reward system through sometimes tougher times."
As we wander the exquisite showroom, a massive space arranged across three interconnecting rooms, Donovan tells us a little of his customer base. "A typical 1212 client is an entrepreneur or a business professional but we also attract 'power couples' and affluent 'zoomers' who're moving into highend condominiums such as the Four Seasons or the RitzCarlton." While every item on display mightn't be exactly to our taste, there's an undeniable decorating wisdom to everything we witness.
"I like to think that 1212 has something for everyone," explains Donovan, "and it's certainly a place to find unexpected items like vintage Tiffany jewellery boxes tucked alongside classic items like nightstands and mirrors." Donovan's enthusiasm is captivating and we hang on his every word. "I love Art Deco, for instance, but this era comes even more alive when played against dramatic, saturated tones like those you might see on the 1950s and 1960s Miami design landscape. Good decorating, as I see it, is all about keeping the eye entertained and surprised." Pausing for a moment to let us absorb his words, he continues; "By combining ideas we take our clients into previously uncharted areas, areas that set their homes apart in unique and exhilarating ways."
Luxury, clearly, is the 1212 mot du jour, but Donovan understands that just a touch can be sufficient to create the illusion of major spend. "I don't believe in inflated prices," he assures us, "and while many of the things we sell are certainly expensive, they're actually very realistically marked up from my buying trips. And I like to include in my stock smaller items that can flavour even the most inauspicious home."
When we enquire about 1212's most expensive items, Donovan responds" "As I said, we're not about elevating prices just to create an 'exclusive' reputation. When something is expensive it's because of its provenance or its pedigree. One of the priciest items I have presently is a handfinished red vitrine with rubbed silver leaf accents. It's by CR Currin and retails for $14,350." As we narrow our eyes, Donovan adds; "But that pales compared to a Larry Laslo dining suite for $48,000. But for that you're buying what will almost certainly become a family heirloom."
For indulgent spending such as this, however, a 1212 client is afforded many extras. "We're a design showroom that just happens to offer retail as well. We're happy to provide our services to those who need assistance at whatever level the project might require. I like to think of this as added value as we don't charge a design fee." Luxury, by Donovan's description, is all about the embodiment of fine artistry. It can be witnessed in the carving of an exquisite sculpture just as much as it can be in the touch of beautiful velvet covering the frame of a dramatic Christopher Guy sofa. "Luxe indulgence," he concludes, "is all about detail and, if executed correctly, it will be the one thing you soon realize you can't live without."
Further down Yonge is another lovely store called Artifacts, where owner Christopher Caterer also understands everything there is to know about highend shopping. The eclectic store is one of two branches (there's another in Muskoka) and each offers a wonderful mix of antler sideboards, classic Louis Vuitton art prints, huge buttontufted sofas and whimsical items, such as a 1956 model yacht that's been imaginatively reversioned as a glasstopped coffee table. Caterer and his team have curated one of the city's best selection of artworks, as well as an associated range of precious collectibles that will help turn your highend decorating dream into reality. In fact via Artifacts we've put our own money where our mouths are, having just purchased two button tufted nickel detailed chairs for our Toronto condo.
It's hard not to swoon as we travel this escapist Summerhill retail strip. Other favourite stores include Boo Boo Lefty, where the current trend for "urban cottage" has been pushed to the max. Stock includes an adorable range of ottomans, linen sofas and bleached wood collectibles, as well as a terrific candle range by Kobo if you pop by take a sniff at our personal favourites, which include Anisette Orange, Tabac and Talc.
And of course no Summerhill trip would be complete without popping into AT Design, where you'll find Michael Aram bowls, louis vuitton femmes, ornate Ovaline boxes and a myriad collection of Jonathan Adler ceramics.
What we've discovered in the four years we've lived in Canada is that Toronto, in particular, is a city that truly embraces design, but of course exemplary sources go beyond those found in Summerhill. In the east end of the city, for example, it's also worth checking out Studio B Home to discover a mix of bygone Hollywood glamour brought bang up to date by Barbara Barry, Baccarat Crystal, Dedon and Baker McGuire. And then of course there's Elte, stalwarts of highend inspiration, who have one of the best rug rooms in the city, not to mention utterly dreamy case goods and fabulous glass wares.
Wherever you go, and however you shop, we hope you'll find time to check out at least some of our suggestions; we guarantee you won't be disappointed. And hey even if your budgets are somewhat restricted, a little window shopping will liberate and then hopefully fire your imagination . . . however much you plan spending.
Good luck, and happy shopping!
On May 14 in the Living Section, Colin and Justin offer their take on bargain shopping. Today in the New in Homes and Condos section, Colin and Justin offer advice on throwing a fabulous royal wedding party.
